UPP.INT.12.3. LEADERSHIP

I. MENTORING A NEW EMPLOYEE

2. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Collocations for mentoring

Collocations are words that often appear together. Here are some collocations associated with mentoring.

The company is very focused on professional development.
My role as mentor is to help you reach your potential.
We need to map out a path to advance your career.
One area to work on is language proficiency.
We can tailor the training to meet your needs.

4. TRAINING PLAN

Identifying areas to work on
The first thing to do when making a training plan is to identify the areas in which the person needs to improve.

We need to identify areas where there is room for improvement.

A: Is there anything you're struggling with?
B: I'm having a lot of problems meeting my deadlines.

A: What is an area where you think there's room for improvement?
B: My proficiency in the language is less than I'd like.

A: My role is to support you. Where do you think you could use some help?
B: I could use some help figuring out a better way to manage my time.

Making an action plan
Once you've identified the areas for improvement, you can develop an action plan.

What are our next steps?
It seems as if you have three areas to work on.
Initially, let's focus on your language needs.
We'll often be working side by side.
We should have weekly check-ins.

II. DESCRIBING LEADERSHIP QUALITIES

1. LEADERSHIP VOCABULARY

Many nouns have an adjective form ending in -ic. Study the examples below:

autocrat – autocratic
empathy – empathetic
charisma – charismatic
anachronism – anachronistic

Nouns have a variety of endings for their adjective forms. Study the examples below:

hierarchy – hierarchical
drive – driven
deception – deceptive
skill – skilled

Here is some more useful vocabulary for talking about leadership:

She has great people skills. People like her and want to work for her.
He's a throwback; his ideas are so out of date and old-fashioned!
You should never underestimate your competitors.

2. PHRASES WITH "-ING" VERBS

You can use phrases with -ing verbs to add more information to a sentence. They are similar to relative clauses that start with words like whothat and which, but they are shorter. Look at the example:

The leaders meeting in New York signed an economic agreement.

As a relative clause, it would look like this:

The leaders who were meeting in New York signed an economic agreement.

Phrases with -ing verbs can identify the thing we are talking about. In this example, we are talking not just about leaders, but leaders who want to be effective:

Leaders wanting to be effective should be empathetic.

3. ELABORATING ON A POINT

People will often elaborate (elaborate) on a point to make sure they are understood. One method of doing this is to paraphrase. In the video, Stuartstates that leaders need empathy and then restates the meaning of empathy in several ways.

Today's leaders –  they need people skills; they need empathy. Empathy, in a way that they need to be able to put themselves in other people's shoes. They need to understand what people want and how they feel.

Another method of elaborating is to give examples. Stuart talks about an environment in which people can communicate with one another. He then gives examples of what he means.

A leader has to create an environment where a large number of people can communicate with each other, openly, to work efficiently and effectively together, toward a common goal.

Repeating information is also a way of elaborating. Stuart does this when talking about Elizabeth. Notice below how he repeats the word underestimate.

Elizabeth taught me that you should never underestimate your enemy. I never have and I never will underestimate Elizabeth.

He also uses the synonyms throwback and anachronism to emphasize his point.

Elizabeth is a throwback. She's an anachronism.

III. DESCRIBING A LEADER YOU ADMIRE

1. LEADERSHIP QUALITIES

We admire good and great leaders for the qualities they possess. Study some vocabulary to help you talk about leadership qualities.

He is a just man. He has a keen sense of fairness.
She's a powerful woman, but she's still very approachable.
He was a true visionary, way ahead of his time.
She's not afraid of any challenge. She's fearless.
He's a truly ethical and moral man. He always tries to do the right thing.
The story of her life is inspiring.
He was a brilliant man but never thought he was better than others.

2. TALKING ABOUT A COMPANY'S HIERARCHY

Horizontal or flat companies do not have a rigid hierarchical structure. Executives work with non-management staff and even customers on a regular basis. Vertical or tall companies usually have a strong hierarchical structure with a CEO at the top issuing orders that go down through the hierarchy. This kind of structure is often called top-down.

The CEO's order carried down through all levels of the company.
Our company is organized vertically, and it's quite difficult to climb the executive ladder.
Horizontal management has people of all positions working together.

The highest executive positions in a company are sometimes called C-level.
These positions all begin with the letter C. They include the CEOCOOCFO and CTO, among many others.

The CEO will address the board of directors next week.

When talking about people's job levels, we can include information about their responsibilities:

As HR manager, she is in charge of all hiring.
The CTO is responsible for 15 engineers.
He's head of the accounting department.
All department directors report to the CEO.

3. EXPRESSING ADMIRATION

If you admire someone, you respect and think highly of them. There are many ways to express admiration. Note that respect has the same verb and noun form.

I have nothing but respect for the entire team.
All of the directors respect the decision of the CEO.
We are full of admiration for all he has accomplished.
He is held in high esteem by all his colleagues.
I have the greatest regard for everything she has achieved.
He is in awe of his manager's abilities.

IV. DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP QUALITIES

1. MORE LEADERSHIP VOCABULARY

Collocations: leadership

A collocation is two or more words that often go together. Study these leadership collocations:

Stability is hard to achieve because circumstances change.
Successful leadership includes persuading others and earning trust.
Good leadership includes both sharing a vision and sharing hardship.
Human nature doesn't change with circumstances.
Mental agility will help prepare you for the unexpected.

Here are some phrases to use when talking about monetary issues:

Forbes believes that a global currency is important for stability.Monetary policy has to do with controlling the supply of money.

2. REVIEW: REFLEXIVE PRONOUNCE

Use reflexive pronouns when the person or thing that does the action and receives the action is the same.
Form reflexive pronouns by adding the suffixes -self or -selves to the pronoun.
He persuaded himself to trust them.
The leaders convinced themselves of the need for stronger monetary policy.

You can use reflexive pronouns to add emphasis. Notice that, in these examples, the reflexive pronoun comes directly before or after the regular pronoun.

She herself brought stability to the company.
Myself – don't believe in sharing hardship.

Note: The meaning of the sentences doesn't change if you take out the reflexive pronoun, but the emphasis is removed.

To emphasize that something was done alone or with no help, use a reflexive pronoun with the preposition by.

Were you able to do it by yourself?
She was able to persuade the others by herself.

3. FOCUSING ON A POINT
Focusing on a point is a good strategy for emphasizing something or building anticipation in your listener or reader. One method is to use expressions like these to focus your listener's attention on the topic:

In terms of change, good leaders know that circumstances change, but human nature does not.
Concerning corporate hierarchy, there are two basic models.
With regard to leadership characteristics, decisiveness is among the most important.
Regarding failure, it is not something to be feared.

Starting a sentence with a question word is another good strategy.

What makes a successful leader is not the same in all circumstances.

How you speak to someone is just as important as what you say.

Also, using expressions with one or one of can be effective.
My one lesson I'll give you today is the need for a global currency.
One of the things you should learn is the importance of honesty.
